Itinerary

Day 1 Reykjavik – Thingvellir – Gullfoss – Geysir – Skogar – Skaftafell

We start our journey around Iceland with a visit of the old Icelandic Parliament in Thingvellir on the shore of Lake Thingvallavatn. We visit Iceland´s most famous waterfall Gullfoss and the hot springs Geysir & Strokkur, gushing 20m high steaming water fontains every 5 minutes into the winter sky. Driving along the South Coast we find the impressive waterfall Skogafoss and the folklore museum Skogar where we learn under what difficult and hard conditions the Icelanders had to live in former times. The night we will spend by Europe’s largest and most impressive glaciers, the Vatnajökull.

Day 2 Skaftafell – Höfn – Eastern Fjords – Egilsstadir

Today you have the unique experience to see hundrets, if not thousands of floating icebergs and perhaps even seals in the glacier lagoon Jökulsarlon which is at the edge of one of the Vatnajökull migrating ice tounges. We will drive through the fishing village Höfn and slowly but surely we get to the East-fjords. In this area you sometimes get the feeling the road barely has space between the coast and the steep mountains. We drive the coast line into the fjords which carve the east coast and enjoy the fantastic view. In the small village Stödvarfjördur we visit Petra, a woman who has gathered sampels of all minerals found in Iceland in her stonemuseum. If we have luck we might get the opportunity to observe flocks of reindeer which wander during the wintertime from the islands interior to the lowland near the coast. In the evening we arrive at the town Egilstadir. This friendly town is located near the river Lagarfljot – rumors talk about the monster Lagarfljotsormurinn living there.

Day 3 Egilsstadir – Lake Myvatn / Reykjahlid

Today we will continue our journey along the main road of Iceland which can get to be an adventurous projekt as we cross the Jökuldalsheidi, on of the highes plaeteaus of Iceland, wild and deserted. But waiting for us is the peaceful and picturesque Lake Myvatn and its surroundings with its breathtaking beauty. We drive to the colourful Namafjall area with its smelly sulphur springs and boiling mud pits, then continue to the volcanic area of Krafla where the last eruption was in the years 1975 – 1984, and (weatherr allowing) we take a walk to the the recently active volcano Leirhnjukur field. Our overnight accommodation is situated on the shores of Lake Myvatn. After we have had our dinner we have the opportunity to experience an open air natural bath in the warm and pleasant geothermal waters of the area, while watching northern lights – weather permitting.

Day 4 Myvatn – Godafoss – Akureyri

If the weather situations are agreeable we could start the day by taking a walk across the icebound Lake Myvatn, and there by have the opportunity to observe the pseudo craters of Skutustaðir from a fantastic and unusual point of view. Or we could take a walk in the area of Dimmuborgir “Black Castels” with its peculiar lava formations. Where else if not here you could get the feeling that there might be something true in the islands folk tales about elfs which every inhabitant has heard since his childhood. In the month of May the Lake Myvatn and its surroundings gets to become a paradise for ornithologists as every duck species of Iceland can be found here. We drive on to the majestic waterfall Godafoss which is split in two by the rivers cliffs. And still an other highlight of this day is the picturesque view of the town Akureyri situated at the Eyjafjördur fjord. We get to know the town as we take a city sightseeing tour. We view the modern church, the towncenter and Nonnahus, where the author Jon Sveinsson (Nonni) lived as a young boy with his family. We will overnight in Akyreyri for a good nights rest.

Day 5 Akureyri – Vidimyri – Borgarnes – Reykjavik

Onour way from Akureyri we pass the plateau of Öxnadalsheidi and come to the fertile agricultural area of fjord Skagafjördur with its farmhouses resting peacefully in the winter dressed mountain sides. We will visit the small, nineteenth century turf-roofed church at Vidimyri; see the innumerable hills of Vatnsdalsholar the result of an enormous landslide thousands of years ago and the small but imposing Grabrok crater, distinguishable from its surroundings because of its red colour. In the village Borgarnes we wonder in the footsteps of the great Saga hero Egill Skallagrimsson, which was just as famous for his poetry as his temperamental nature, and visit the related Settlement Center before returning to Reykjavík.

Day 6 Optional – Reykjavík City sights & the Blue Lagoon

We propose you do not leave Iceland without a closer look at the capital Reykjavík and its sights and a bath in the warm mineral rich and healing geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon – a perfect way to relax and reinvigorate body and soul after an exciting journey.
