Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival & transfer to Skalholt/Laugarvatn area.
Arrival at Keflavik International Airport, and transfer to Skalholt, the old bishopsseat, or hamlet Laugarvatn, where we spend the the first three nights.
Day 2 – Gullfoss, Geysir & National Park Thingvellir.
In the morning we depart for the hot spring area of the famous Old Geysir, said to be the father of all spouting springs. Nowadays Strokkur, another spouting spring is very active, spouting it’s waterfountains up into the air every few minutes. Close to the hot spring area is Gullfoss, the “Golden Waterfall”, by many considered to be the most beautiful waterfall in the country. In the afternoon we drive to greenhouse hamlet Laugarvatn and historic Thingvellir National Park with it’ s tectonic phenomena before returning to Skalholt/Laugarvatn.
Day 3 – Valley of Thjorsa river & volcano Hekla.
Today’s tour will take us to the valley Thjorsardal and close to the famous volcano Hekla. Centuries ago there were many farms in the the valley, but as a result of repeated volcanic eruptions in Mount Hekla the valley is deserted today. We have planned a visit to a swimming pool and will see two charming waterfalls, Hjalparfoss and Haifoss. we also visit the restored Viking dwelling Stöng. In the afternoon we’ll take a short walk at the foot of Mount Hekla before heading back to Skalholt/Laugarvatn.
Day 4 – Landmannalaugar & volcanic fissure Eldgja.
We start our day driving along the roots of the volcano Hekla, one of Icelands most active volcanos. Our way leads us to the colourful world of Landmannalaugar, the biggest rhyolie area of the country. Here the volcanic activities caused a very unique landscape marked by colourful hills and hot steam. We take a walk to explore the blue, red, white and yellow hills and the all black obsidian lava stream. After that we can relax in the natural hot spring here to be fit for the drive through the everchanging landscape of Fjallabak to the canyon Eldgja where we take an easy walk to see the waterfall Öfaerufoss. In the evening we reach the South Coast where we spend the night in the village Kirkjubaejarklaustur.
Day 5 – Skaftafell National Park & glacier lagoon Jökulsarlon.
We drive over the endless sanders resulting from the big floodings after volcanic eruptions under the glaciers and get under the spell of Europe’s biggest glacier Vatnajökull. We visit the National Park of Skaftafell, a green oasis in this white world with very special vegetation and fauna. We walk up to waterfall Svartifoss, surrounded by basalt columns. An hours drive further we will visit the glacier lagoon of Jökulsarlon where we will take an ampibious boat tour on the lagoon getting very close to the icebergs floating about in the murky waters. Overnight stay in Vík area.
Day 6 – Dyrhola “island”, Skogar, Skogafoss & Nesjavellir steam power area.
We leave Vik and head back towards Reykjavik, enjoying some more of the sights along the way. The first stop of the morning will be at Dyrholaey birdcliffs with panoramic view over the sandy southcoast and glaciers in the background. At Skogar we visit the very popular folk museum, with it’s many interesting exhibits, among others an old restored south Icelandic farm, built of stone, grass and turf. Nearby lies another, very fascinating waterfall, Skogarfoss, one of the prettiest waterfalls in the south. From the waterfall we will continue on in a westerly direction heading to lake Thingvallavatn. At the lakes south side (remember the Nat. park on the north side on day 2) we will put in a last stop at Nesjavellir, a high geothermal area. Here we will visit the modern steam power plant (and if time allows take a short walk) and then head through the magic mountain area surrounding the plant back to Reykjavik where you will spend the following two nights.
Day 7 – Reykjavík City sighseeing and Viking restaurant.
In the morning we will take a 2-3 hour Reykjavík sightseeing tour to leave the afternoon at your free disposal, to explore the world’s northernmost capital on your own in more detail. In the early evening we will meet again for a last gettogether at the Viking Restaurant in Hafnarfjördur, where we will enjoy a typical Icelandic meal along with some traditional specialties. The waiters and waitresses at the Restaurant are clad in traditional clothing and will entertain you with old Icelandic folk songs during dinner.
Day 8 – Transfer to Keflavík International Airport.
Transfer to the International Airport in Keflavik and Departure.
