A five day hotel and coach tour

Iceland means new and different things to see and do, whatever the season. You don’t need to travel around the country to experience it all, whether it’s the power and beauty of nature or the glimpse of history. In our 5 day hotel and bus circle tour in the west- and southwest of Iceland you will discover that every part of the year has it’s own special attractions, character and charm. Whether it’s the riot of colours in the autumn, the wild romantic landscape covered with snow shimmering under the green Northern lights in winter or spring when the daylight spreads and stretches out. It will be a journey that you will never forget.

Itinerary

Day 1 Reykjavík - Bjarnarhöfn – Stykkishólmur

The magic of the West

We start our journey from Reykjavík by driving west and via the 7 km tunnel under Hvalfjördur fjord to the Akranes community with it’s unique Museum centre. From the Borgarfjördur district we head for Bjarnarhöfn with cured shark produce (samples are included), old farm church and much more. The first two nights we will stay in or near Stykkishólmur, the small and friendly town by the islands of Breidafjörður. There are many old houses in the town that give it a certain distinction, among them the Norwegian House with the local folk museum. From Stykkishólmur an optional boattour to the fjords archipelago with its attractive marine life scenery is possible.

Day 2 Snæfellsnes circle tour

Iceland in a nutshell

The Snæfellsnes peninsula is said to offer”Iceland in a nutshell” where amazing works of nature culminate in the glittering mystical glacier, Snæfellsjökull. The area is one of Iceland’s newest national parks. We pass several fishing villages including Grundarfjörður and Ólafsvík and explore the shore which abounds in bizarre rock formations like the two rock stacks Lóndrangar. We visit Hellnar and the small fishing community Arnarstapi. If the weather permits we have a possibility of a snow scooter tour on Snæfellsjökull glacier.

Day 3 Stykkishólmur - Dalir - Eiríksstaðir - Borgarnes

Elves, ghosts and Saga heroes

We drive east along the coast of Skógarströnd to Dalir district “The Dales” in the heart of West Iceland which have a particularly rich history and diverse natural attractions. It’s enchanting and magical in a literal sense with the classic Saga of the People of Laxárdal, countless stories of elves, ghosts and sorcerers. A beautiful place for sightseeing is the coastal road which we drive around the headland. On the way back we visit the historic site Eiríkstadir (the Eric´s farm) where Eric the Red lived until he was exiled from the country and sailed to Greenland, where he resettled. It is the birthplace of his son Leif the Lucky the first European to set foot in America in the year 1000. By the ruins of Eiríksstaðir has risen today’s conception of the farmhouse where Leif grew up. On our way from Dalir to the Borgarfjördur district we see the small and imposing Grábrók crater, distinguishable from it’s surroundings by it’s red colour. We stay overnight near Borgarnes and visit the popular Settlement center. Several sites mentioned in the Saga of Egil one of the gems of Icelandic medieval literature are found in the vicinity. We can say that we wander in the footsteps of the great Saga hero Egill Skallagrímsson who was as famous for his poetry and temperamental manners.

Day 4 Reykholt - Deildartunga - Hraunfossar

A showcase of nature and history

Borgarfjördur is a showcase of lava formations, geothermal activity and history.

There is grand scenary with chasms and waterfalls, overlooked by glaciers on the rim of the highlands. We spend the day seeing some interesting sites in the Borgarfjördur district and with not too much driving. First visit is made at Reykholt, one of Iceland’s most notable historical sites. It was the homestead of the famous author, scholar and politician Snorri Sturluson (1178 - 1241). Visitors can see the thermal pool where he took his daily dip for bathing. We stop at Deildartunga hot spring in the valley, the most productive in Europe and at the beautiful Hraunfossar or the waterfalls of the lava, one of the most scenic spots in Iceland.

Day 5 Hvalfjörður - Þingvellir - Gullfoss - Geysir - Reykjavík

The Golden circle

We drive to Hvalfjordur fjord again but instead of the tunnel we turn to the left to Lake Thingvallavatn, a beautiful lake in the likewise beautiful national park of Thingvellir. This geologically interesting area was also the site of the old Icelandic Parliament. We visit Iceland’s most famous waterfall Gullfoss “the golden waterfall” and the Geysir geothermal area. We’ll visit a beautiful church, Skálholt the ancient seat of Icelandic Bishops and drive to the small charming villages at the south coast Stokkseyri and Eyrarbakki with their beautifully preserved old houses and finally we stop at the greenhouse village Hveragerdi before returning back to Reykjavík.
