Borgarfjordur & Kaldidalur
BORGARFJÖRDUR - KALDIDALUR HIGHLAND.
Duration ca. 10 hours.
This excursion is without doubt one of the most varied in regards to landscape, a real treat for the eye and the mind. Along the shores of the fjord Hvalfjördur the drive will take us to the fertile farming area of Borgarfjördur. Some of the sights there include the hotspring Deildartunguhver, yielding more boiling hot water than any other in Europe. Not far from there lies Reykholt, where the Icelandic statesman and poet Snorri Sturluson lived in the 13th century. In the inner regions of Borgarfjördur we'll see one of the most enchanting sights that Iceland has to offer, Hraunfossar - the Lava Waterfalls. These small waterfalls appear from under a lava field and fall over a stretch of about 200 m into the canyon of the glacial river Hvita. From here we head back to Reykjavik, but not the easy way! The route lies over the Kaldidalur Highland Road, the highest lying highland road in Iceland. The road leads through vast, barren stone-deserts surrounded by glaciers, to descend into the National Park of Thingvellir before arrival in Reykjavik.
Departures daily - only in winter subject to snow conditons - please inquire.
Suitable for all group sizes - optional with or without tour guide.
